As the global COVID-19 pandemic continues, some of the most vulnerable communities affected are those of the indigenous Maya throughout Southeastern Mexico (Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo). More than four months after the national pandemic contingency plans have been implemented, there has been no official information campaigns carried out in the Maya language, which has left already-infected families and even entire communities completely unaware of the protocols and preventative measures recommended to stem the spread of the virus. In addition to not having adequate communication about the situation, many members of the Maya community have had their livelihood and employment directly impacted, with the closing of municipalities and states throughout the country.
Seeing the urgent need to respond, Green Habitat, the parent company of eco-development Vita Tulum, has initiated efforts through its nonprofit My Green Habitat to develop the “COVID-19 RELIEF FUND“, to directly benefit the Maya community in the region, and to bring much needed support to impacted communities. With so many Maya depending upon commerce in the region for their livelihood, including construction, the arts, agriculture, honey production, and tourism, extending support to vulnerable and impacted communities is extremely important.
One of the first ideas of My Green Habitat is to invest in the installation of vertical gardens, which essentially are systems that allow people to grow plants of all kinds in a vertical structure in small places. This will allow thousands of Maya to grow and harvest their own healthy, natural food from home, during a time where there is food uncertainty for many.
My Green Habitat is also devoting a portion of the fund for the support of midwives, since the role that a midwife plays throughout a woman’s pregnancy is essential for the baby’s and the mother’s health. Today, there are adult midwives in the communities who require greater support and attention, as they perform a most important and essential service to the Maya, where so many children are delivered in home births.
Children’s education will always be the fundamental pillar in the formation of a child. This is why My Green Habitat is committed to exponentially supporting and promoting their knowledge through donations that guarantee that children never stop learning and developing immense skills.
And finally, in the face of adversity, My Green Habitat recognizes that best tools we can provide are knowledge and skills, thus preparing men and women for a solid future where they are adequately prepared for new economic models adapted to “the new normal.” Strengthening knowledge based on this will ensure the ability for Maya community members to contribute to their families and culture in new and expansive ways.
